Introduction
This one is for Akron, I promise.
When one of the greatest basketball players of all time– none other than LeBron James happens to be the NBA 2K19 cover athlete for the game’s 20th Anniversary, you find the most impactful place to build a new court. And that place just happens to be right in his hometown.
Now, the students of LeBron’s I PROMISE School and neighborhood kids have a special place to hone their skills in basketball and teamwork; a striking court with an inspirational message.
What We Did
Turn A Parking Lot Into A BasketBall Court
In 2018, LeBron James opened the I PROMISE School in his hometown, an investment in the education of at-risk students and their entire families. With the help of Xbox, the City of Akron, and the LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF), 2K Foundations constructed a brand-new outdoor basketball court.
Building the court was a momentous task that included carving out space from the parking lot for a fully outfitted basketball court with floodlights, surrounding fence, adjustable rims and “We Are Family” custom artwork. The ribbon cutting was a special event with a very special host, LeBron James. Along with his former high school teammates, they played a game against the I Promise stars of tomorrow. The courts now provide access to basketball for both the I Promise students and local youth. Meanwhile, inside of the school benefited from a new games room, compliments of Xbox.
